How to Hire a Custom Portrait Artist

Why Commission a Portrait?

A custom portrait preserves more than appearance. It captures personality, emotion, and a moment in time that no photograph can fully convey. Whether celebrating a milestone, honouring a loved one, or adding a meaningful heirloom to your collection, an original painting delivers a sense of permanence and intimacy that printed images seldom match. Fine art also conveys taste and discernment, elevating any space with a story that belongs uniquely to you.

Clarify Your Vision

Begin by deciding what you wish the portrait to express. Consider:

  • Subject – A single person, a couple, a beloved pet, or a group.

  • Mood – Formal and dignified, relaxed and candid, or something more imaginative.

  • Setting and Palette – Indoors, outdoors, or an abstract background, along with colours that complement your décor.

  • Placement – Where the painting will hang informs ideal size and framing.

Having a clear vision helps you select the right artist and streamlines later conversations.

Research Artists and Styles

Explore online portfolios, local exhibitions, and recommendations from galleries or friends. Look for consistency in technique, mastery of light and expression, and an aesthetic that resonates with your taste. Pay attention to medium as well – oil, pastel, or mixed media each create a distinct look and feel.

Evaluate Fit

When you find an artist whose work speaks to you, review:

  • Portfolio Depth – Variety of subjects and a proven record of quality.

  • Client Testimonials – Feedback on communication, process, and final results.

  • Availability – Many portraitists accept only a limited number of commissions each year to maintain high standards.

Initiate Contact

Reach out with a concise email that includes:

  • A brief description of your concept and subject.

  • Reference photographs that clearly show features, preferred angles, and lighting.

  • Your desired timeline and any special requests (e.g., specific framing, gift deadlines).

Clear information at the outset allows the artist to respond with an accurate proposal.

Discuss Details and Pricing

A professional portraitist will guide you through:

  • Size and Format – From intimate Bijou to statement Gallery pieces.

  • Composition – Poses, background, and any symbolic elements.

  • Timeline – Sketch phase, painting schedule, and final delivery window.

  • Price Range – Confirm what is included (e.g., matting, frame, certificates).

  • Payment Terms – Deposit, balance, and secure methods such as PayPal or credit card.

Ensure all agreements are confirmed in writing for clarity.

Receiving Your Artwork

Once complete, your painting is sealed with archival varnish, accompanied by a signed certificate of authenticity, and carefully packaged for collection. You select and book the courier that meets your preferred service level, transit time, and insurance requirements. Detailed packing specifications are provided to ensure safe arrival.

✨ If you don’t LOVE it, you don’t pay for it! ✨

I was watching an art competition program a few months ago when they unveiled the commission.  The shock and disappointment on several people’s faces – including the sitter and the institution where the portrait was to hang – was obvious.  While it was an interesting work, it was… well… just not what anyone except the artist was really expecting.

I made a decision at that moment that if my clients don’t love what I create, they don’t pay for it – it’s that simple.

At the outset, I will give you an idea of the general style and direction I feel the piece will go, and will base it around the photos you send to me.  Once the painting is complete, I will send you several photos of the piece for you to review.

My clients to date have always loved their finished pieces, but if for any reason someone doesn’t, they don’t pay for it, and I will simply retain the work.

Each commission receives my full attention, so availability is limited. Reaching out early ensures a place in the studio schedule.

With love and appreciation,
