Commission a Painting

Hello ~ I’m Bella St John, and it is my great pleasure and privilege to connect with you and give you some information on what for many is an experience they perhaps only thought they could dream of…  Having their very own portrait commission.

Creating a painting, whether portrait of a person, an animal, depicting a particular scene, or creating an abstract work – this is a deeply personal and rewarding journey for me. I have always been passionate about capturing the essence of a painting—not just the physical attributes, but the emotions, passions, and unique qualities that make the image special and unique. Every commission is a reflection of that person’s spirit, and I pour my heart into ensuring that their story is told on the canvas.

Due to the time and care that goes into each piece, I am only able to accept a limited number of commissions. This allows me to devote the necessary attention to each painting, ensuring it’s a true expression of both your desires and my artistic vision.

Commission Process

To begin the process, I ask my clients to provide several photographs of the image they would like me to paint, along with details about their passions, interests, and any special moments or qualities they wish to highlight. This helps me connect with the subject on a deeper level and create a painting that is not only visually striking but also emotionally resonant.

How long is the process?

It usually takes around 2-3 months from the time I receive all your photos to when you are able to receive your finished piece. On occasion I am available for a rush commission, so it is always best to reach out to me if you have a short deadline to give the painting at an event such as a birthday, anniversary or the like.

✨ If you don’t LOVE it, you don’t pay for it! ✨

I was watching an art competition program a few months ago when they unveiled the commission.  The shock and disappointment on several people’s faces – including the sitter and the institution where the portrait was to hang – was obvious.  While it was an interesting work, it was… well… just not what anyone except the artist was really expecting.

I made a decision at that moment that if my clients don’t love what I create, they don’t pay for it – it’s that simple.

At the outset, I will give you an idea of the general style and direction I feel the piece will go, and will base it around the photos you send to me.  Once the painting is complete, I will send you several photos of the piece for you to review.

My clients to date have always loved their finished pieces, but if for any reason someone doesn’t, they don’t pay for it, and I will simply retain the work.

People and Pets

Whether you want a portrait of an individual person, a beloved furry friend, or a combination of the above, just let me know.

I will look through the photos you send, and we can take it from there!

Sizes

I usually work in one of the following formats:

BIJOU FORMAT

Framed to a refined 30x40cm (11.8″ x 15.7″) size, this 21x30cm (8.3″ x 11.8″) portrait exudes understated elegance and quiet sophistication.

Intimate in scale, and set within a premium frame and accented by a custom-cut mat, this artwork is perfect for collectors who appreciate the power of subtlety and the beauty of timeless, personal expression.

SALON FORMAT

Framed to a striking 50x70cm (19.7″ x 27.6″) size, this 40x50cm (15.7″ x 19.7″) portrait offers an exceptional balance of presence and grace.

Beautifully proportioned for most interiors, it’s a favourite among collectors seeking artwork that makes an impression without overpowering the space; perfect for those who appreciate timeless elegance with a contemporary flair.

While not precisely to scale, the following gives you an idea of the two format sizes:

Pricing

Pricing is thoughtfully tailored to each unique commission, taking into account the intricacy of the subject, and the desired size, ensuring a truly personalized piece of art.
