Commission a Painting

Hello ~ I’m Bella St John (no, that’s not me 🙃 ~ am currently working on a self-portrait that will go there ~ and hopefully I will look a little happier than this lovely but forlorn-looking statue), and it is my great pleasure and privilege to connect with you and give you some information on what for many is an experience they perhaps only thought they could dream of…  Having their very own commissioned artwork.

Creating a painting, whether portrait of a person, an animal, depicting a particular scene, or creating an abstract work – this is a deeply personal and rewarding journey for me. I have always been passionate about capturing the essence of a painting – not just the physical attributes, but the emotions, passions, and unique qualities that make the image special and unique. Every commission is a reflection of that person’s spirit, and I pour my heart into ensuring that their story is told on the canvas.

One collector paid me the ultimate tribute:

Your paintings feel alive!  It’s like they will step right off the wall…

Due to the time and care that goes into each piece, I am only able to accept a limited number of commissions. This allows me to devote the necessary attention to each painting, ensuring it’s a true expression of both your desires and my artistic vision.

* Important Note:  I am currently in Serbia where restrictions are such that all original works of art must be submitted to the government for approval before they can be sold and shipped out of the country.

As such, at present, I am only accepting commissions where the painting can be sent digitally – for example, I have recently completed a commission creating several paintings for a book that is due for release later this year.

I’m so very sorry for any disappointment this may cause – it’s heartbreaking for me, but it is what it is.

Commission Process

To begin, clients provide several reference photographs along with notes about the subject’s passions, interests, and the qualities they wish to highlight. This allows me to connect with the essence of the subject and create a piece that is not only visually captivating but also deeply resonant.

✨ If you don’t LOVE it, you don’t pay for it! ✨

I once watched an art competition reveal where both the sitter and the institution were visibly disappointed by the commissioned portrait. The experience reaffirmed my commitment: if a client does not truly love their finished piece, there is no payment due.

Before painting, I’ll share the general direction I envision, based on your photos. Once the work is complete, you’ll receive detailed images for review.

To date, every client has been delighted with their finished piece, but if someone ever isn’t, they owe nothing, and I simply retain the work.

How long is the process?

The process typically takes two to three months from the time I receive your reference photographs to the point your finished piece is ready. On occasion, I accept rush commissions for special events such as birthdays or anniversaries — please enquire if timing is important.

Subjects of Inspiration

Every commissioned work begins with connection — a sense of story, emotion, or atmosphere seeking expression in paint. Whether inspired by a portrait, a beloved companion, a cherished place, or an abstract concept, my focus is always on capturing essence rather than mere likeness.

You’re welcome to share a few reference images that convey the light, mood, and perspective you love. From there, I develop an approach designed to translate that vision into a work that feels timeless, personal, and distinctly yours.

Sizes & Pricing

Every commissioned piece is created uniquely — no two are ever alike — so these prices serve as a general guide rather than fixed tiers. What matters most is creating a work that captures the spirit of the person, moment, or feeling you wish to preserve.

SALON FORMAT:

Smaller Works — Beautifully Framed with Mount (up to A2)

These intimate portraits and studies are created in oil pastel on fine art paper and presented in a simple brushed-gold frame, ready to hang.

My Salon works evolve through the materials that serve them best – for my style, this is usually oil pastel, but can also be acrylic, watercolour, refined textural layers, or a combination – each chosen to capture the essence of the individual composition.

Prices generally range between USD 1,500 – 4,500, depending on size, detail, and subject.

GALLERY FORMAT:

Larger Works — Acrylic and Oil Pastel on Stretched Canvas (A2 and above)

These expressive abstracts and statement pieces are created on stretched canvas for gallery-style display without the need for framing.

My Gallery pieces are primarily created using acrylic and oil pastel on canvas, where layered materials and textures are integral to the depth and energy of the composition.

Prices typically range from USD 3,500 – 10,500, depending on scale, complexity, and texture.

Other Formats

If you envision something outside these dimensions — or something uniquely personal — we can explore the possibilities together to ensure the finished piece reflects your intent perfectly.

Each commissioned work is individually priced and created to embody your vision.

Collector’s Courier

Your artwork is carefully prepared for travel, accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity and all relevant documentation. Once packaged, it will be ready for collection by the courier of your choice.

Selecting, booking, and paying for transport — including insurance, customs duties, or local taxes — rests entirely with you as the collector. I’m happy to provide introductions to reputable art couriers to assist your arrangements.

This approach gives you complete control over timing, cost, and service level, ensuring your piece arrives securely and in perfect condition.
